Like many foodies out there, I've seen the hype around wagyu and the different kinds of grass-fed, massaged, etc. beef that is on the market...I hadn't really considered much about the fascination, nor did I understand much about the certifications and criterion for the different categories and price points. I had, however, and my husband had tried some of these Kobe and wagyu beefs at restaurants. As always, they come at a high price, and so I did some research and decided to get him something for his love of steaks.
So, I decided to surprise him with some wagyu steaks. But where to find them?
That's where Instagram comes in. I'd been following Mia Khalifa for some time because she's awesome, a foodie, and gorgeous. She used this company, CrowdCow, a few times and so I looked into them because of her endorsement.
After looking around the Internet at the various prices for wagyu, I was stuck in sticker-shock-mode. According to Business Insider, "High-grade wagyu can cost up to $200 per pound. The rarest steak in the world, olive wagyu, can cost anywhere from $120 to over $300 for a steak. Wagyu calves can be 40 times the price of US cattle. The adult cows can sell for as much as $30,000." With prices like that, CrowdCow's range of wagyu costing $45-$510 seemed like a MAJOR steal.
Fast forward a few months and we ordered when they were having a sale. Our steaks arrived and my husband immediately mocked the size, assuming it wouldn't fill him -- this is a man who eats thirds and fourths at Thanksgiving.
We went with the Japanese Wagyu Petite Striploin in the 5oz size.
The package was neatly packed and nicely packaged overall; we are and were quite happy with this purchase. The marbling in the steaks was simply unreal, as pictured. Note: I am not some big blogger, so there's not an endorsement deal here or anything!
The steaks came with cooking instructions, keeping instructions -- everything we needed as wagyu newbies! We followed the instructions listed on the accompanying card that only called for salt and pepper. This was the most buttery steak I've ever had, and there wasn't a lick of butter in the mix. It was absolutely unreal!
